Kids own the summer – from little feet running through garden sprinklers to small wet footprints around the pool. But now, grown-ups can get in on the action in a chic adult way. When the little ones are away at camp, why not transform the kiddie pool party into a sophisticated swim sesh? Arren Williams, The Bay’s Creative Director of Home Fashions, shares his tips.• Send paper invites instead of e-vites
If you have time, opt for the more sophisticated route. "Send out invites on cool cards or stationery – no emails, please. A mailed invite is the far chicer way to go."
• Keep your guests hydrated in style
"Invest in some large-scale tubs – either with a metallic look or in bright colours – to house everything from bottles of Veuve to your hubby’s fave beer. Add ice, chill and enjoy!" Remember to stock plenty of non-alcoholic drinks for designated drivers and non-drinkers.
• Create a retro garden-party vibe
"Get playful with outdoor games like croquet, bocce or pétanque." A mini-tournament could stir up some competitive spirit, while less "sporty" guests can act as judges or cheerleaders!
• It’s okay to baby the adults
"Fill the pool with colourful floats and get ready to spend the day on the water." Sunscreen lotion bars will help protect you and your guests from the sun. Add some floppy hats and a sitting area with an umbrella to provide refuge on a hot day.
• Serve up some swag
"Spring for a slew of ultra-bright beach towels in the season’s hottest patterns and hues. Letting guests leave with theirs would be a fun takeaway, and save on laundry for you! You can also encourage that relaxed vibe by filling a tub with flip-flops in a multitude of colours and sizes, then ask your guests to kick off their Jimmy Choos."
• Supply garden-proof drinkware
"Pick up a bunch of acrylic glasses." They provide the sophistication of glass, but won’t break during overzealous storytelling or when knocked over by a stray inflatable ball. "Colour is key this year, so mix and match bright shades to add maximum style." You can also swap out paper plates with cute outdoor tableware to match your party theme or decor.
• Light up the night
"As day turns to night, take the easy route and flip the switch on a gas firepit for instant ambience – no matches required!" Add lanterns and candles to light up the night and take the party well past bedtime.
• Spice up your patio decor
"Why not add some colour to your outdoor living space with bright garden-friendly cushions that are designed to stand up to getting soaked (and will still look fab)!" A variety of throws can warm up your chilly guests when the sun goes down, while outdoor music players and wireless speakers guide the vibe from day to dark.
• Beat the BBQ blues
Keep the King of the Q fully stocked with a variety of tools and gadgets that’ll keep the guys talking. "Fancy holders make corn a more civilized snack, while cool spices and rubs, and the hottest hot sauce you can lay your hands on, can be great gifts for pool party hosts!"
