The Benefits of Exfoliation

Skin is the largest organ of the human body. It has the ability to regenerate itself constantly. Typically, a 'young skin' will renew its outermost layers approximately every two to three weeks. However, as people age and their skin is exposed to the abuses of daily living (pollution, sun and stress) the process of cell renewal is slowed. As a result, the dead skin cells on the surface build up and remain on the surface longer. In turn, this causes natural tissue repair and cell regeneration to occur at a much slower rate. Over time skin will appear uneven and dull because the flow of moisture between the layers of the skin is hindered. Even though most people moisturize after bathing, they are actually moisturizing dead skin cells! To truly hydrate your skin, you must first remove all those layers of dead skin with the help of a good quality scrub. Once those dead cells are removed, the new cells beneath can shine through, and moisturizers can then fullfill their duty.
Body Scrub Types
There are many types of body scrubs, and each scrub has a different level of exfoliation based on its ingredients. The main exfoliator in a scrub can be anything from sea-salt to sugar to natural plant exfoliants (crushed seed pits for example). Scrubs can be a cream or paste and the main base ingredient can be a cream or a clay. For optimal results, body scrubs should be chosen based on a persons skin type, as different body scrubs serve different purposes. For example, people with sentitive skin should use a scrub that is less course than somone with non-sensitive skin, and people with very dry skin should use a scrub that contains higher levels of moisturizers. A good quality scrub will contain excellent moisturizing oils that leave the skin feeling soft and supple and not dry and irritated.
